The Illusion of Algorithms: Read This Before You Get Trapped!
Nagaraj Vaidya
The moment you open your eyes in the morning, you unlock your smartphone and start scrolling, thinking "just for five minutes." How many times have you lost hours inside that glowing screen? The videos we watch, the news we read, the posts we laugh at or boil with rage over... if you think all of this is "your own choice," please forgive me, but you are living in a massive illusion! In reality, your fingers aren't moving across the screen of your own free will; instead, giant servers sitting in dark rooms thousands of miles away are making you dance like a puppet on a string. Every image and every word that catches your eye is no longer your choice; it's a meticulously calculated script prepared by an invisible force with the sole purpose of keeping you trapped inside the app!
The name of that invisible force is the 'Algorithm'! This is not just a mathematical formula; it is a magical web designed to take control of our minds, our thoughts, and ultimately, our personalities. When the internet began, we all celebrated it as an infinite ocean of knowledge, a democratic platform where everything was freely accessible to everyone. But today, anyone who understands the tech world will agree on the bitter truth: algorithms have divided that vast ocean into tiny ponds, turning us into frogs confined within our own little puddles.
The moment we unlock our phones, our fingers automatically slide toward social media apps. This is no accident. Tech companies have hired the world's top neuroscientists and psychologists to design these platforms. Just as slot machines in casinos exploit human vulnerabilities to extract money, these apps use the exact same tactics to steal our 'time'. The anticipation of finding something new every time we swipe down (Pull-to-refresh) triggers the release of a chemical called 'dopamine' in our brains. This is the real villain turning us into digital addicts.
Who Holds the Remote Control to Your Mind?
My father always used to say, "Never step into the water without knowing its depth." The same applies to this digital realm. When technology is controlling us so deeply, understanding how these algorithms work is the most urgent need of the hour. Every single second you spend on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, or X (Twitter) is being watched like a hawk by this system.
Exactly how many seconds you paused at a particular post, what you liked, where you commented—everything is precisely recorded in their servers. It is constantly lurking to build an exact replica of your thought process. Dreaming that any of us can escape this is futile! Using this colossal data about us, Artificial Intelligence (AI) prepares a highly accurate Psychological Profile of your mind. These machines understand your weaknesses, your fears, and your likes far better than you do. Once the remote control of your mind falls into their hands, the real game begins.
The digital world today has transformed into a massive battlefield. And the war being fought here isn't anywhere else—it's inside our minds! AI analyzes every single digital karma of ours (click, share, like) and predicts our next move even before we make it. We might believe we have 'free will', but in reality, the choices presented to us are strictly confined within a framework pre-determined by algorithms.
The 'Ignorance Bubble' and the Dangerous Echo Chamber
You might innocently ask, "What's wrong with an app showing me exactly what I want?" On the surface, this looks like excellent customer service. But in reality, it is a tactic that strangles your intellectual growth. Knowledge only grows when we encounter diverse perspectives that challenge our core beliefs. The tech world calls this the 'Ignorance Bubble' or the 'Filter Bubble'.
Inside this bubble, everything is exactly to our liking. It serves us information that perfectly aligns with our beliefs, our caste, our political leanings, and our prejudices. It never allows any truth that we dislike or that contradicts our ideology to even come near us. Algorithms lock you up for life inside an 'Echo Chamber' where you only hear your own reflection. Here, whatever you shout simply echoes back to you over and over again.
For instance, if you are a supporter of a specific political party, your timeline will be flooded with hundreds of posts singing the praises of its leaders. Any good work done by the opposition, or any mistakes made by your favorite leaders, are systematically hidden from your view. Because of this, a dangerous illusion takes root within us: "What I believe is the ultimate truth, and the whole world thinks just like me."
Meanwhile, on the phone screen of the person sitting right next door, the very same algorithm has created an entirely opposite world. Two individuals living in the same society are existing in two completely different, mutually hostile worlds in the digital space! This digital divide is so deep that we have lost the ability to understand our neighbor's reality. While our blood boils over some global controversy, we completely forget to talk about the potholes on our own streets. For algorithms, global outrage is far more profitable than local issues.
Anger as Capital: The Naked Business of Tech Giants
This isn't limited to politics. This bubble of ignorance is active in health, science, and history too. If you watch a video containing misinformation about a disease, for the next ten days, YouTube will recommend hundreds of similar videos featuring fake doctors and pseudoscience. Eventually, you reach a point where you accept that lie as the ultimate truth. Watching hundreds of Reels and Shorts every day, we proudly strut around with the arrogance of "I know everything." But we fail to realize that what we know is merely the 'truth' manufactured inside that bubble.
The real motive behind this magical web is glaringly obvious: naked business. Data is the new oil of today's world. The primary capital of these tech companies is our 'Attention' and 'Time'. No matter how many free apps you use, remember: you are not the customer; you are the product being sold! The longer you spend on their app, the more ads they can show you. And that translates to billions of dollars in profit filling their pockets.
The easiest way they've found to keep us hooked is by triggering our negative emotions. Algorithms know very well that provocative and hate-spewing posts attract us far more than peaceful, logical, and balanced writing. An angry human reacts more, comments more, and shares more. Our anger is the ultimate cash cow for tech giants. The more we fight each other on the streets or in comment boxes, the fatter their bank balances grow.
As a result, we are losing our power of Critical Thinking. When we read something, we no longer have the patience to ask, "Is this true?", "What is its source?" We have turned into a hasty generation that jumps to conclusions just by looking at a headline and blindly trusts WhatsApp forwards as gospel. This is a cultural tragedy that is breaking relationships and dividing society. The patience to read long articles or books has been swallowed whole by 15-second Reels. For the first time in history, the human train of thought is collapsing at this terrifying speed.
The Mind Needs a 'Cyber Armor'
Today, it is not enough to install an antivirus on our computers; our brains and our thoughts need a strong 'Cyber Armor'. That armor is Digital Literacy. This isn't just about knowing how to operate a computer; it is about cultivating the power of discretion—to distinguish between what is right, what is wrong, and what are the lies being force-fed to us by machines.
The responsibility on tech journalists and analysts today is greater than ever before. Technology shouldn't just be limited to reviewing new gadgets; it should be about exposing the corporate conspiracies behind these devices to the common people. Artificial Intelligence should be a tool that complements humanity, not a dictator that controls it. We need to continuously sound this alarm to society.
The more we disconnect from the physical world, the deeper our enslavement to the digital world becomes. We must step out of our houses, break free from the artificially created world of screens, and mingle with reality. If you wake up in the morning, get on a bicycle, and hit the road, the real wind hitting your face and the reality of the streets will give you a glimpse of the authentic world—a world without algorithms. Our thoughts can only break free from these echo chambers when we build direct connections with nature and real people.
The Way Out of the Illusion
We must break free from this slavery. Today, ignorance is not just a lack of information; it is the result of our own misguided priorities. If we don't have the willpower to control our own feeds, it means we aren't thinking; we are just acting as puppets of programmed machines. This isn't just an attack on our personalities; it is an attack on the consciousness of humanity itself.
The first step out of this illusion is 'Awareness'. Accepting the truth that our phone is making decisions on our behalf. Cultivating the patience to read newspapers that contradict our beliefs and listening to the opinions of people who don't align with our ideologies with an open mind is the urgent need of the hour. We must stop blindly accepting the 'recommendations' algorithms throw at us and revive the old habit of 'searching' for what we intentionally want. Artificial intelligence should be a tool that shows us the path to knowledge, not a master that controls us.
To survive in the digital world today, what we need is not just a cheap internet connection, but strong discretion. Breaking the bubble of ignorance is not an easy task; it shakes our beliefs and is uncomfortable. But the vision of truth only happens in that uncomfortable environment, not inside the comforting bubble of lies. No matter how advanced AI gets, it can never match the power of human self-introspection.
Technology is both a mirror and a magnifying glass. It reflects the good and bad within us and magnifies it. Question the next video or post that pops up on your screen. Piercing through this magical web of algorithms and returning to the real world is our duty as conscious human beings. Yes, there is temporary comfort in the bubble of ignorance, but there is no freedom there. The decision to reclaim that freedom and protect the sovereignty of our thoughts is now at your fingertips.
